I was at a birthday party at my cousins house the other day and I noticed this animated discussion. I think the whole neighborhood noticed the discussion. Imagine a whole bunch of puertoricans gathered around yelling at each other. My cousin is a partner of mine and besides being a very smart person he is very business savvy,  it is mainly because of him that I have one of the fastest growing organizations in the Hudson Valley NY area.

The topic was our job market and how to make money in this economy. My cousins argument was that the old thoughts of get a good education, get a good job and then you can retire wealthy is a myth that has gone by with the last century. His friend on the other hand still believes that the way to succeed in our economy today is to get a good conventional education, work hard for a good company and retire happy. Now I sat there for a while and just listened until he started claiming that the more college education you have the more money you can make. Now I am not one to knock a good education but college and money really have nothing to do with each other. They are totally and completely unrelated. Just because that is the way the market themselves it does not make it true. 99.9999% of all colleges produce good employes.

So as I sat in front of a computer I just looked for some evidence on how schooling and money are not connected (http://www.hereinreality.com/drop_outs.html ). But really that is just a small handful of people in the grand scheme of things. More convincing is just to use your personal experience. How many people go do you know personally that went to college and are doing what they went to college for? Now think about all the people that you know personally that went to college and took the same major- one is wealthy and the other one with the same potential, education, and abilities is struggling financially. College has nothing to do with money.

But I have discovered a link between entrepreneurialship and wealth. Everyone that I know that is wealthy is a business owner. Whether that is as self employed, a partner in a business, or a big business owner. All of them own a business in some way. I challenge you to look around you and notice and I guarantee that most if not everyone that you know that is financially independent, that can retire comfortably has an entrepreneurial mind. They did not get there just by working for someone else.

I believe that your belief create your reality. If you can figure out how someone thinks and what in NLP they call the meta-programs if you can figure out what the recipes are that make that person successful you can become the same type of person. So some of the characteristics of entrepreneurs are

  1. Dont go to college because you want more money!

    Be Wealthy

They understand and have evaluated the worst case scenarios and are aware that they can survive through it to risk what they have in order to get what they want.

  2. They know that they have something unique to offer the world and they are willing to share and capitalize on it.
  3. They are unreasonable.
  4. They will do what ever it takes to get what they want. They play the money game to win.
  5. They usually have something bigger than themselves that they are working towards.
  6. They believe in CANI- constant and never ending personal improvement.
  7. They enjoy what they do!

Unfortunately the person in the story is still the same person and believes that in order to succeed you need to get a good education, get a job with a good company that cares about you, retire comfortably, you need to be happy with what you get and that everything has a catch. Although I agree with many of the things he believes I suspect it is not in the same way. If you want to go to college to get a good education- GREAT! If you want more money be an entrepreneur.
