Success Mindset

Success Mindset

Success is different for all of us

Today I started re-reading University of Success by Og Mandino. In lesson number two, Og Mandino quotes from a book by Howard Whitman, Success is Within You. His analogy of success is brilliant. He describes success in two parts, and equates it to an ice-cream soda. “The two main criteria for success: 1. Do others think you are a success? 2. Do you think so?” He describes the two above statements as being like the straw to an ice-cream soda. It is nice to have both, but if you had to choose, it’s better to have the ice-cream soda and not the straw. The same goes with success. It is nice to have both of the criteria above, but if you had to choose, it is better to have what you define as success. It is sad how many people think they want something because it is the lifestyle of someone they admire- Hollywood celebrities, sports figures or even someone in their niche market. People need to stop imitating others and find themselves. Who are you? What are your needs? What are your wants? What is really important to you?

Whitman goes over some of the essentials found in true success:

1. Purpose- Most of the people that are truly successful are those that have a purpose. They are happy in spite of their position or non- position in life, beyond just what we believe success to be. They are the ones that are passionate about life. Sometimes they are an enigma to the network marketer. By that I mean that they enjoy what they do in spite of the fact that we would see it as work. These people have a purpose, and the most successful ones have a strong purpose. What I believe happens with most of us is that we truly don’t know ourselves well enough to know what our purpose should be.

2. Ups and down- It is not all uphill, but there will always be up moments and down moments. Moments where your purpose is out of sight and moments where it is so clear that nothing can stop you. It is just nature, humanity.

3. Success is not free- Some people look at those that seem successful in any arena of life and make the weirdest statements like- “They are lucky” or ” they must have been in the right place at the right time”.

4. Satisfaction- There are those that just can’t be happy. They don’t realize that happiness is under their control. In reality, we can find happiness even in the darkest moments of our lives.

5. Spirituality- A contention that I have with many motivational speakers is in this area of their philosophy. I won’t go over my beliefs, except to say that people do need to feel a sense of belonging to something bigger. But just because you have created a warm fuzzy feeling with your “creator” does not mean that you have a relationship with God. Many people from many different religions have felt the same way. God is God. There is one path to him, and if you are not on it, you are just not on it. But I don’t believe that spirituality, or lack of it, precludes you from experiencing true success here on earth.

I want to leave you with this thought about success -

“Only with laughter and happiness can I truly become a success. Only with laughter and happiness can I enjoy the fruits of my labor. Were it not so, far better would it be to fail, for happiness is the wine that sharpens the taste of the meal. To enjoy success I must have happiness, and laughter will be the maiden who serves me. I will be happy. I will be successful. I will be the greatest salesman the world has ever known. “ -Og Mandino

Forget About Value- Give your Best!

Forget About Value Give your Best!Forget about providing value. Concentrate on giving your best. By giving your best, you ensure that you are providing value.

Quality of any sort is such a rarity. We have such a Walmart mentality- we want everything as cheap as we can get it. The problem is that we get the cheapest products. “Planned obsolescence,” one of the concepts that allows our markets to function, also produces products that are meant to break down immediately. This, I believe, creates a market that breeds mediocrity.

We have all heard of the surgeons that have left implements inside of their patients or that amputated the wrong leg. Value is hard to find these days. I see people write junk. I understand, I have been trying to write an article everyday for the last 50 days. What the heck do you write about? On top of that, I am horrible at grammar and spelling. But I don’t just want to put an article out there that is just there to get rankings on the internet. I want to provide value- something that will help people. Have I given the best value every time? Maybe not, but I have given my best when doing it. I think I have learned allot in the process. I believe that we should stop concentrating on quantity and start concentrating on quality. But keep these points in mind:

  1. Originally I was running into a common mistake that people make. I was confusing perfection with excellence. I would stop myself because I did not believe that what I had done was my best. I guess it was arrogance and ego. So I would not do anything. Now I say, don’t let perfection stop you. Now what I shoot for is excellence.
  2. Don’t compare yourself to others, especially if you have don’t know them personally. You do not know what they have been through to get to where they are today. Maybe I don’t provide the best content on the internet, but I have been giving it my all, even when on occasion I didn’t feel like it. What you should do is compare yourself to your best. When you finish an article ask yourself- Is this work representative of my best in the here and now? Are you being satisfied with good enough? Are you writing articles to get rankings on the search engines or are you writing good content and then figuring out how to get that content to rank? What is the purpose of your writing? Are you serving your audience or yourself? You can do both.
  3. Write about what you are passionate about. As you can see, some of my articles have the same subjects, just from a different perspective. Those are the things that I am passionate about.
  4. Give it your best! How do you feel when you know you have not given your best?
  5. Don’t dwell too much on your results. This is a big point that I have realized. This is more true when implementing free marketing methods such as article writing and blogging. No one knows you, so how can you measure your results? Your job is to provide your best- something that you are proud to stand behind.
