I was talking to a mentor of mine and we where discussing the pros and cons of our industry. He said Marcus let me tell you a story. Network Marketing has gotten a bad rap. And for good reason even tough most people can become excellent business owners very few will. And when we sell our business we sell the sizzle.
Let me explain so many people have been given the wrong impression that it is an easy endeavor to be a network marketer.
Imagine me coming up to you and saying “You can have everything you dreamed of financial freedom, time freedom and the lifestyle you desire doing what you
want to do with whoever you want to do it whenever you want to all you have to do is XYZ business it takes time and effort but it can be done. Many others have you can too.”
Now you might consider that right? Now imagine this
“I can offer you a business in which you can have everything you dreamed of financial freedom, time freedom and the lifestyle you desire doing what you want to do with whoever you want to do it whenever you want to all you have to do is XYZ business it takes time and effort but it can be done. Many others have you can too, but there is a catch that all those who fail don’t even realize- this will be one of the hardest journeys you will take, you will probably have to get of of your comfort zone and do things that people would rather die than do, become a people person and become an expert at leading people, you have to give up your nights and weekends, give up some of your friends and sometimes be made fun of? And on top of this you might not even succeed with your first try, most people that start in business fail, the average network marketer makes 10 per month, some companies go out of business and you lose your income.”
Get the point. When selling your business ( I know some of you are under the delusion that you don’t sell) but when selling your business you have to put your best foot forward.
To compound this problem most people are employes because that is what they were trained to be. They were taught how to be good employes. So they do not know how to own a business of their own and often fail because of this lack of knowledge. So in order for anyone to succeed at business they need to have somewhat of an entrepreneurial mind. Although some people believe that this is an inborn trait that only a few have. I personally believe that it can be thought to most. From personal experience I have met people that don’t seem to have an entrepreneurial bone in their body, succeed in business.
Because of the low start up cost most people are willing to take the financial risk but don’t seem to be able to follow through with what ever it takes to “succeed mentality” that most entrepreneurs need. So these are some of the most important traits that I have had to work on in order to succeed in network marketing. The good thing in network marketing is that if you find the right mentor whether part of your company or outside of your company you can do amazing things. For those that have hung in there in their business and have been failing or at least stagnant this could be your solution.
Self discipline- Without self discipline there is nothing that can be done. Not only don’t you have a regular boss telling you what to do. You usually have to start your network marketing business while still working your regular 9 to 5 job. On your “spare” time. HA! So you have to have incredible self discipline. To be able to give up your nights of relaxation and your weekends for this venture that you don’t even know if it is going to work.
In order to develop self discipline you have to develop integrity. I would recommend being true to your self . If you say you are going to do something you better do it and not fail. If you fail handle your set back gracefully but don’t let yourself of the hook. This is why accountability to a coach is so valuable. but you need to have integrity to yourself. Do what you say you are going to do.
Consistency- Even if you have self discipline you can lack consistency. Right now I am practicing consistency and self discipline. As you can see, I am not a very good writer, I had to take remedial writing in school but I made a commitment to myself to do this twice a week every week. Write something about what I have learned in life. I am unique and my influence is different than all others.
Belief- not only do you need belief in the business of your choice you need to have belief in yourself. The best way to have belief in yourself is to live by the principle that with each victory the next struggle becomes less difficult. That you will win. In this paraphrase of OgMandino is the inherent fact that you will try. That you will go from victory to victory. Create a destiny, create your purpose.
Determination- making a decision and not backing down from your desired goal. If your decision is to make more money and have more time don’t let anyone or anything steal that away.
Find A Why- with a strong enough why the points above become easier. With a strong enough why no one can stop you. Your “Why” does not have to be something that you are working towards a “why” can be your destiny. Countless men and women in history have succeeded because they believed that it was their purpose in life. The magic of belief is amazing.
People, selling and all other skills are secondary. It is Be-Do-Have. You first have to be the person then you will do and learn anything you have to in order to have what you want. Many people are still stuck in their employe mentality and love to be told what to do to succeed. The always want to know what do I do. How do I do it? In the world of entrepreneurship that is secondary.
